Villa St. Benedict is a Catholic senior living community, co-sponsored by Benedictine Sisters of the Sacred Heart and Benedictine organization. We provide our residents with a dynamic continuum of care encompassing the social, spiritual, physical and mental aspects of the individual, steeped in the Benedictine core values of Hospitality, Stewardship, Respect and Justice.

A storied history and rich tradition of serving local communities

Benedictine Sisters of the Sacred Heart

The Benedictine Order was founded by St. Benedict in 6th century Italy. Over the past 15 centuries, the Order has spread to all parts of the world. St. Scholastica, the twin sister of St. Benedictine, led a monastery of women.

In 1852, St. Walburg's Abbey in Bavaria sent three Benedictine women to the United States to minister among immigrant families in St. Marys, Pennsylvania. It is here that several thousand Benedictine Sisters in more than 50 North American monasteries have descended.

One of these monasteries, Sacred Heart, was founded by Mother Mary Nepomucene Jaeger in 1895, on Chicago's west side. When the city grew much larger, Mother Nepomucene moved the community to the more peaceful surrounds of Lisle, Illinois, a quiet atmosphere more conducive to reflection and prayer. Since 1912, and under the leadership of seven Prioresses, the community has resided on the 47-acres grounds.

At the heart of the Sacred Monastery is a glorious chapel adorned with stained glass windows, an original Baldachino altar finished in ivory, and a life-sized statue of the Sacred Heart, Patron of the Benedictine Sisters. At the heart of the sisters' mission is Hospitality: "Directed by the Gospel and Rule of St. Benedict, this mission is based on a commitment to use the time, talent and resources of the community for those in need."

Currently, the Sisters continue to serve the needs of the church in the Lisle area in numerous ways. Their corporate mission of serving the elderly came to life in 1987 with the opening of the Queen of Peace Retirement Center, which was later renamed Villa St. Benedict. When Benedictine organization became a co-sponsor in 2004, the continuing care community was expanded to include 238 independent living homes, assisted living, activity and wellness centers, as well as memory and respite care.

For 35 years, Benedictine, a nationally recognized, non-profit senior care organization based in Duluth, Minn., has provided a full spectrum of health and housing services to aging adults. Benedictine owns and manages skilled nursing, assisted living and independent living communities across the upper Midwest and offers services in such areas as therapy, rehabilitation, memory care, home health care, adult day and transitional care. Benedictine is sponsored by the Benedictine Sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery, Duluth.
